- Lindsay Bottoms is the deputy head of the Centre for Research in Psychology and Sports Science at the University of Hertfordshire in the UK.
- She says that in order for sporting events to resume amid the COVID-19 pandemic, more research must be done into the safety of wearing a face mask while undergoing intense physical exertion.
- Bottoms explains that during heavy exercise, we exhale more carbon dioxide than usual. If that carbon dioxide is trapped by a face mask and re-inhaled, it could reduce brain function and make it harder to breathe properly.
